- "The prodigal son returns, But this isn't your home anymore, is it? Jonathan Wick."
- —Katia to John Wick[src]
Katia Jovonovich (Катя Джовонович) is the surrogate sister of John Wick and the new leader of the German branch of the Ruska Roma.
Biography
Background
The majority of Katia's early life remains a mystery, except that she was born in Berlin and raised in the ways of the Ruska Roma by her father Pyotr. During her childhood, she grew close to John Wick and both of them were raised together for several years as siblings, with Pyotr becoming a father-figure to John. However, John eventually became excommunicado as a result of executing Santino D'Antonio on the grounds of the New York Continental. Despite him having been excommunicated, he sought help from his adoptive mother, The Director, who ran the New York branch of the Ruska Roma. She begrudgingly agreed to give him passage to the Casablanca Continental and tore John's "ticket," preventing him from ever being accepted back into his former home.
John Wick: Chapter 4
- "You are forgetting we are still under the Table. And last I checked, you are Excommunicado and your ticket was torned."
- —Katia to John Wick
Following John's murder of The Elder, Vincent Bisset de Gramont retaliated by having Killa Harkan kill Pyotr, and sent them the bill for the hit. Katia was forced to bow before Killa. In order to win his freedom from the High Table, Winston Scott suggested that John challenge Vincent to a duel, but it would have to be on behalf of a crime family on the High Table. As John's ticket was torn, he traveled to Berlin in search of Pyotr to have it mended, only to have Katia and the Ruska Roma nearly hang him for his crimes. After John revealed his intention to duel Vincent, Katia made a deal with him to let John back into the Ruska Roma in exchange for him killing Killa to avenge Pyotr's murder. After John killed Killa and brought her one of Killa's gold teeth as proof, Katia welcomed him back into the Ruska Roma and mended his ticket by giving John a brand of their crest on his arm, getting a matching one on her own arm at the same time.
Personality
- "John: We can help each other.
Katia: You can't even help yourself. How the hell are you going to help us?" - —Katia and John Wick
Katia is a cold and vengeful woman. She and John have a rough relationship, to say the least, but she offers to assist him in getting back at the Marquis in exchange for killing Killa in order to exact revenge on the man who murdered her father. Katia is shown to be full of anger at the time when John returns to Berlin to have talks with the Ruska Roma. With her orders, her fellow members hang John in a rope for him to be interrogated. She was also struggling with the death of her father Pyotr, with her forced to kneel in front of Killa Harkan. It also shows that Katia is a sturdy and a brave leader in the Ruska Roma, having nothing to fear and even having her the burning mark of the crest, she appears to be sturdy.
When John returns after the kill on Killa, Katia doesn't bother apologizing for phoning ahead via the High Table so that no matter what happened, she and the Ruska Roma would be safe from further punishment, while making John's job much more difficult. To her credit, she upholds her half of the bargain and performs the ceremony that restores him to the ranks of the Ruska Roma, as well as giving him the crest that they were arguing about before he left. To demonstrate that she isn't just a manipulative lady, she immediately and gladly honors her promise and invites John back into the fold so he can battle the Marquis for his freedom. In addition, Katia also appears to be religious as she is seen praying inside the Ruska Roma's church.
